NEWS CELSUS ANNOUNCES THE ISSUANCE OF U.S. PATENT DERMATAN DISULFATE INTIMATAN07/20/1999 - Cincinnati, Ohio -- Celsus announces the issuance of U.S. Patent 5,922,690 on July 13, 1999 which claims a dermatan disulfate (tradename Intimatan™) comprising L-iduronic acid->4, 6-O-disulfated N-acetyl-D-galactosamine sequences, an inhibitor of thrombin generation and complement activation. The inventors are Celsus’ founder Cornelius L. Van Gorp, Robert J. Linhardt, Ph.D., of the University of Iowa, Michael R. Buchanan, Ph.D., of McMaster University, and Stephanie J. Brister, M.D. of the University of Toronto. The patent is assigned to IntimaX Corporation, an affiliate of Celsus Laboratories. The patent relates to research on alternative anticoagulants underway at IntimaX Corporation. The thrust of the research is the development of antithrombin III-independent inhibitors of surface thrombin which target the diseased vessel wall and help prevent coronary arterial thrombosis. Celsus Laboratories, Inc., a closely-held enterprise founded in 1987, develops and GMP-manufactures bulk heparin and heparin-like glycosaminoglycans. Celsus and IntimaX are headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio.
